JOB SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for administering appropriate emergency medical treatment to victims of accidents and other life-threatening situations.

MAJOR DUTIES:

o    Renders emergency, non-emergency, and life-saving medical assistance to those in need.

o    Responds to the site of life-threatening or other emergency medical situations.

o    Responds to non-emergency assistance calls.

o    Insures the proper functioning of all emergency medical equipment and vehicles through regular inspection.

o    Insures adequate inventory supply aboard emergency vehicle through regular checks.

o    Transports injured or sick persons to appropriate care facility.

o    Extricates victims of accidents when necessary.

o    Receives and dispatches 911 calls.

o    Completes necessary state and local paperwork, including reports and billings.

o    Maintains current state certification through continuing education.

o    Monitors police, fire, and GEMA radios.

o    Participates in public education activities and special events.

o    Maintains office and shop facilities.

o    Performs housekeeping and maintenance duties as assigned.

o    Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

o    Knowledge of basic emergency medical and life-sustaining techniques, including patient assessment, cardiac care, trauma and shock care, and ventilation and other CPR techniques.

o    Knowledge of medical terminology.

o    Knowledge of the county road system and geography.

o    Knowledge of radio and 911 communications.

o    Skill in driving, emergency and otherwise.

o    Skill in the administration of emergency medical techniques.

o    Skill in the use of rescue tools and equipment.

o    Skill in extrication techniques.

o    Skill in patient assessment.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:  The Shift Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions requiring the use of judgment.  The work is spot-checked in progress and upon completion for accuracy, compliance with procedures, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES:  Guidelines include state laws and policies pertaining to emergency medical treatment, as well as established procedures and medical protocol.  Additional guidelines include written and verbal orders from superiors and continuing medical advancements.  These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but require interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY:  This position consists of related duties in responding to and administering treatment in emergency situations. The need to determine appropriate medical procedures for a wide variety of situations, as well as the emotional stress of dealing with emergency and life-threatening situations, contribute to the difficulty of the work.

SCOPE AND EFFECT:  The purpose of this position is to provide emergency medical care to victims.  Successful performance affects the operation of the department, the health and well-being of county citizens, and the public image of the department.

PERSONAL CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically with co-workers, hospital personnel, law enforcement personnel, fire department personnel, victims of accidents and their families, and the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically to provide services, exchange information, and provide counseling for victims and their families.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The work is typically performed with the employee sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending, or crouching.  The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguish between shades of color.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is typically performed in highly stressful outdoor situations, where the employee may be exposed to noise, contagious or infectious diseases, machinery with moving parts, and occasional inclement weather.  The use of protective clothing and devices is required.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:  None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

o    Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.

o    Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/ internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

o    Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver=s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

o    Possession of or ability to readily obtain appropriate state EMS certification.
