JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for directing the operations of the county maintenance shop.
MAJOR DUTIES:
o Manages the general operations of the county maintenance shop.
o Prioritizes, schedules, and assigns repair work to shop personnel.
o Interviews prospective employees and makes hiring recommendations.
o Maintains personnel records: approves leave requests and completes annual performance reports.
o Trains, counsels, and supervises shop personnel; inspects completed assignments.
o Manages vehicle fleet repairs and maintains service records.
o Manages the maintenance of the departmental parts inventory and purchase of all needed equipment and supplies.
o Directs the cleaning and maintenance of shop facilities and equipment.
o Serves as purchasing agent for the department, including obtaining price quotes and inspecting products for quality and adherence to regulatory standards.
o Assists with the preparation of the annual operating budget for the shop; monitors expenditures under the current budget; projects annual vehicle and equipment expenditures.
o Prepares bid specifications for new departmental vehicles and equipment; prepares vehicle specifications for other departments; road tests vehicles as necessary.
o Develops and manages an ongoing preventive maintenance plan for county government vehicles and equipment.
o Performs or oversees preventive and corrective maintenance procedures.
o Assists department heads in determining vehicle salvage.

o Maintains computer records of gasoline used through the county=s card system and gas station.
o Supervises detainees.
o Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
o Knowledge of management and supervision techniques.
o Knowledge of preventive and corrective maintenance procedures.
o Knowledge of record-keeping systems.
o Knowledge of the mechanical functioning of a wide variety of vehicles and equipment.
o Knowledge of purchasing procedures.
o Knowledge of state guidelines and standards for the maintenance of emergency vehicles.
o Skill in budget preparation.
o Skill in written and oral communication.
o Skill in operating a wide range of power tools.
o Skill in performing preventive and corrective maintenance procedures.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Public Works Director assigns work in terms of departmental goals and objectives. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports, and observation of departmental activities.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include relevant federal and state regulations, manufacturer manuals and parts catalogs, wiring diagrams, OSHA regulations, and county policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of varied managerial and supervisory duties in overseeing the operations of the county maintenance shop.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to manage the county maintenance shop. Successful performance results in an efficient shop and properly functioning vehicles and equipment for the county.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, vendors, and other county employees.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed with the employee sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, and use tools requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office and shop. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, paint fumes, and occasional inclement weather. The use of protective devices may be required.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position has direct supervision over Maintenance Supervisor, Secretary, Mechanic, Mechanic/Welder, Service Truck Operator, and Shop Inventory Clerk.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
o Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
o Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the division/department in order to direct and coordinate work within the division/department, usually interpreted to require three to five years of related experience.
o Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver=s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
